Indie Artist of the Week: Jensen Keets

I should probably explain why I've been absent for these past weeks (finals, if you must know), and how I'm chillin' it out in Sunny California, but I won't.  That's not interesting.  What is interesting is an interview I had the opportunity to do with the lovely singer-songwriter Jensen Keets.  I could go all fan-girl for days about what a good lyricist she is, and how her voice is far far better than most singers on the radio,  but, I'll let you find out for yourself.

First of all, we’d like to thank you for the interview!  You’re a fashion designer and musician.  I find it really impressive and inspiring that you haven’t put one talent on hold in order to focus on the other.  How do you juggle both professions?

Oh my...it is a juggle indeed.  I have currently been trying put the gas petal more on my music to accelerate in that career, but it has been a huge challenge.  Because I work for a small firm, I have always worn several hats besides just designing.  Sometimes it requires late nights in the office.  All companies are trying to recreate themselves to generate capital from new areas now because of the current economy and technological changes.  The squeeze keeps getting tighter, and the number of hats keeps growing.  It's tough.  The plus side is I have learned this incredible trade, and that I have been able to pay a mortgage and finance my record through my job in fashion.  I love both fields, but my heart finds more joy in the expression of music.

There are several musicians that are also known for their unique fashion, for example, Madonna, Elton John, or more recently, Lady Gaga. Are there any such musicians that you look up to or have inspired you?

Oh definitely Madonna.  I love her.  She is always creative, and has such sassy, tasteful class.  There is nobody that does it better than her.  I admire her on many levels.  In the early years her shock methods were brilliant.  She is an incredible artist and a brilliant business woman.  She has always tested the limits by using fashion, dance and current urban trends, to make her music more than just music.  It was an entertainment experience.  Michael Jackson was also a huge inspiration for me regarding this.  That mans talent blew my mind.

We were all blown away by your song “Expectations.” (Actually, it’s worse than that.  It’s stuck in our heads, and we’ve been singing it constantly.) What’s the inspiration behind it?

I believe it started out by wondering about myself and a bunch of my single female friends...    There seem to be many attractive, and successful women here that just can't seem to find steady romantic partners.  I find it to be somewhat of an urban epidemic here in NYC.  Ha.  New Yorkers are extremely friendly despite their reputation.  However, many people here have, "what do you want from me?"  shields held high, guarding them.  Most people live here because they have big dreams, big expectations, therefore agenda is priority.  In addition, our society influences many people into feel a false need to constantly upgrade, setting their expectations high on ego and materialistic status symbols.  From their cell phones, to careers as well as personal relationships.   The choices seem unlimited, so turnover is prevalent.  In a nut shell, it's about all the expectations of all these outside influences that we place on ourselves.  I believe it's deceptive.  It's much more fruitful to focus on our happiness from within.

Many modern musicians have songs that deal with social issues.  However, you’ve done the same without making your songs sound corny or repetitive.  On the contrary, your lyrics are poetic, frank, and, overall, impeccable.  All I can ask is, how do you do it?

Wow, first of all, thank you.  That's an incredible compliment.  I really have to pressure myself to write.  I'm a bit of a procrastinator, or some like to call it a percolator. :)  I book studio time a month ahead, then I casually think about what I will write about for a couple weeks...but I never really start writing until around the 3rd week when the heat is on.  Then, I'll hit coffee shops, and sometimes bars, and starting writing everything going on in my head.  I will write for hours and let the world around me disappear.  Then, ...well, sometimes this part actually comes first, it depends,....I will sit quietly in my apartment, without looking at anything I wrote and I will just feel what comes.   Usually a major piece of the song just comes to me in lyric and melody together.  It's sort of a third eye, out of body channeling that occurs.  I usually hear it in my head first, then pick up the guitar and work that part of it out.   Finally, I labor over the lyrics 1 or 2 days before the studio session (sometimes stay up all night) to work around that part of the song that came naturally.  Many times I'm still writing in the studio.  Also, I go back to my pages of journaled writings from the coffee shop and pull bits out.  It's only recently I've starting picking up the guitar first and working out different progressions I like.

When did you become interested in music?  Can you remember the first song you ever wrote?

Ever since I was a little girl, I 've always been in love with all types of music.  I remember the first time I actually thought I could sing.   I was at my best friends house....I was probably about 7 yrs old singing "On The Radio" by Donna Summer at the top of my lungs.  Music never really propel me at that time because soccer took over my world as a young girl.  I then became turned on again later at the end of my Senior year in High School.  I started singing for my church as a song leader on Sundays.  I had a really slow start in writing songs, because I had no musical training, and I wasn't sure where to begin.  I think I wrote my first song around 1995.  I wrote two songs back then, and yet again time got away from me.  I was busy climbing the corporate ladder in the fashion industry.  Then, after my Mother died of an inoperable brain tumor in 2003, I really woke up and realized that life is extremely short.  You have to go for all your dreams right now, because you never know when your mortality card is up.  So, I literally started manifesting making an album.   I started taking guitar lessons, and through my guitar teacher at the time, Karyn Kuhl (formerly of SexPod), I met my producers, Barb Morrison and Charlie Nieland, who I knew could help me achieve my vision.

Who or what is the inspiration behind your work?

Well, besides the obvious repetitive single NYC woman challenges and stimulus, there are a couple other variables.  One being, as I mentioned above, that my Moms death really had an effect on me to utilize my creativity and my voice, with all my soul, while I have the opportunity to do it.  The second inspiration has been music artist Sarah McLachlan.  There is something about her music, her voice, and her songwriting that has continued to propel me to keep moving forward.  As an active philanthropist with Lilith and women's rights, her music school SMMO in Vancouver, and ASPCA, etc., she has inspired me to keep it real and make my music more than just a pretty love song.  Music is incredibly empowering and healing.  It seems obvious to tie in charity whenever possible.

Anyone you’d really want to duet with?

That might obviously be Sarah McLachlan.  I would also like to duet with Billy Joel.

What can we expect from you in the future?

I intend to get a lot more performing under my belt.  I am current working on figuring out a way to free up more time to tour.  I will continue writing, of course.  I would like to make this more of a disciplinary part of my schedule.  In addition, I would like to start designing some specialty leather and faux leather jackets to offer under my own label.  It's all just the beginning.

You know what to do ;)

Emily Osment is all grown up. Just like Miley....

Has anyone heard about Miley lately? More like daily. I can't keep track of her scandals anymore, there are to just too many. But no one ever really paid any attention to her Hannah Montana costar, Emily Osmet.

Emily here thinks she can sing. Just like Miley. I thought, okay whatever, she's a Disney star, they have to stretch every dime out of themselves. We've seen this act before. Nothing new.

My expectation for her song lyrics were something along the lines of this:

Its my life I'll do what I want with it! Let me have fun in the summer sun.

Or,

I see you staring at me and I know that we are meant to be.
You and I forever and always. Oh, oh, ahhhhh, oh.

I'm serious, does anyone remember Ally and AJ?

No one, no one don't wanna be no one but me!

and then their song, "In A Second."

Don't know where you are.
Wish I could be near you.
I would sail oceans to get a
glimpse of how you feel

You get the idea.

So I was a little surprised to hear her song. Because I figured she would at least have a few months of being squeaky clean. I even gave her the benefit of doubt when I saw the picture above where I'm 90% sure she's supposed to wear a shirt with the bra?

I was WRONG.

Hey whats your name I think I like you/ Come a little closer now/ Wait what you say is that your girlfriend I think I'll be turning that around/ Don't you wanna don't you wanna know what it would feel like?
Let's be friends so we can make out/ Your so hot let me show you around/ I see what I wanna play/ everyone knows I'm getting my way/ it doesn't matter what you say/ I'm knocking you down, down, down/ I'm knocking you down, down, down/ I'm knocking you down, down, down.

Now, it wasn't explicit or anything but would you want your 8 year old sister going around the house singing that?

You can listen to the rest here. Please be advised she can't sing. She's completely edited and you will waste 3 minutes and 5 seconds of your life that you will not be able to get back.

One more Disney star down!

-Sophia

P.S. If you would like to spend 3 minutes and 5 seconds of your life or more on in a better way, here are a few worth while things to do:

1- Listen to Expectations by Jensen Keets here. If you want to be blown away for 3 minutes and 41 seconds.

2- Go outside and do a few sit ups.

3- Go to Free Rice and feed a hungry family.

Molly Parden = Instant Happiness

After a brief (right) hiatus, I decided to resurrect Indie Artist of the Week.  Yup, be proud of me.

Molly Parden honestly, honestly, sounds like summer.  I listened to her for the first time a few days ago when I ditched my diet was enjoying some coconut ice cream out on the hammock.  For 4 minutes and 15 seconds, I felt like ocean breezes and walking barefoot through the grass (...shoot me...). You might have a completely different sensation, but, trust me, it'll be nice.  Join me in my reverie, download "Cream Soda Kiss" here.  If you need more incentive, it's free.  And, if you're less cheap poor than I am, you could buy a song and support this lovely musical genius.

Lastly, friend her on Myspace or follow her on Twitter.

Peace!

Interview with Yousef on video games, girls, and Twilight. Things haven't changed much

When I was ten, I wanted to be a hairdresser. I had my tenth birthday at my dad's beauty supply.  It was beauty themed and my friends and I had our hair and nails done.  Obviously, things have changed since then.  A lot. Fortunately, I have been able to keep in touch with the good part of my ten year old self.  I mean, ten is important.  As my friend Ximena once said, it's the first time you're a double digit number!

Anyways, I decided to interview my ten year old brother, Yousef, to ask him if things have changed since I was a first-time double-digiter.  We talked about sci-fi, heavy metal, and girls.  If he didn't like video games so much, I would swear we were the same person. Really.

How have you been dude? Uh, good.

So, tell me, what's life really like for a ten year old? Uh boring. It's ok.  I'm ten so there's not really much to do, except play video games

Other than video games, what are things you're really interested in?  I'm interested in sci-fi movies, heavy metal.

I'ts not really that heavy, you know...  Well, I'm interested in Evanescence, Linkin, Park, Nirvana, Foo Fighters-

Well, Nirvana is grunge, and the Foo Fighters are alternative rock.  What about Evanescence?  And Linkin park?

Evanescence is probably metal... Linkin Park is just hard rock maybe.  Sometimes they're nu metal...

What are your friendships like?  {We} play video games?  Play sports.  Talk about movies, and how dumb they are. {We talk} about how dumb Twilight is.

Who do you talk about Twilight with?  Uen.  I tell him Twilight is dumb.

What are things you're afraid of?  Spiders.  I'm not gonna say the dark.

When you're ten do you still hate girls.. or do you kind of like them? You hate them.  Because they ruin your life.

Some of your friends have girlfriends already, you know... I know that... and... I tell them they're dumb because of that.  And I don't think an eight, nine, or ten year old should have a girlfriend.

How old do you think a boy should be to have a girlfriend?  I don't think they should even have them.  It's a waste of your time.  Play video games instead.

Or read a book?  Some books.  If they're sci-fi.  And Ralf S. Mouse.

Don't you like the Hobbit? The Hobbit is sci-fi.  Ish.

Fantasy.  Yeah, I guess so.

What do you want to be when you grow up?  I don't want to think about growing up because then I'm supposed to be mature.

If you were a superhero, who would you be?  Uh... (he ponders on this) Hm.  (He shrugs and gives me a weird look.)  I don't know.  I know who I would be if I was a villain.

Who?  The joker.

Why?  Because he's weird.

Are you weird?  Maybe...

Why do you think that?  It's a joke. I'm not weird, I'm awesome.

If you had to chose between jumping off a cliff or spending the whole day with a ten year old girl, which would you shoose?  On the other hand, I love cliffs.

Any last words?  Star Wars rocks.  Peace out

Well said.

No Longer In Love

Jared Leto has become a Blondie. Rockers don't become blondes.

While I am no longer in love, I still want to go to that concert.

Surf's Up with Levi the Poet

Currently, I'm going through my Beach Boys Stage.  I have one every year.  They make me feel happy and giddy and chill!  Those are atypical, but, nevertheless, welcome feelings for me.  If Brian Wilson was still young and I was the fangirl type, I would send him passionate love letters, revealing my intense, unparalled admiration for him.  Since I am as much the fangirl type as Brian Wilson is still young, I do not.  And I don't see myself doing it in the future.

What does this have to do with our Indie Artist of the Week, you ask?

Nothing at all, I just felt like mentioning it.

Ivan the Poet is the Indie Artist of the Week.  I don't remember how I stumbled upon his work, but I'm glad I did.  Seriously, he has more energy and passion than Axl Rose!  He makes me want to do something big and change things and look into deep, dark, ugly places of myself that I would rather ignore.

Quite different from the inspiration I get from my sweet old Beach Boys...

or become a fan on Facebook
                     or follow him on Twitter
                     or follow his blog

And then listen to "Good Vibrations" and feel happy and superficial again.

The post that I was supposed to post a long time ago...

Actually, I already did this. But I accidentaly erased it. So it's here again, for your enjoyment.

A few words before you listen. You have to be deep to get it. So please, be deep, let me know what you think, and go. Go, friend Sir Hathaway on Myspace, become a fan on Facebook, all those social utility sites that I don't use. Please, and thank you.

You guys can breath easy now.

So I'm back. Unfortunately, because I hadn't had my fill of fun, but it's good to be back home. I was not on vacation, FYI, I was at a conference. This one to be precise. (Sophia-She doesn't need her fill of fun I do, she should of stayed with me and gone to see The Box with me, the more important one.)

*Update* Sofia vandalized my post before it was even finished. That's sisterly love for you. I was not on vacation, I was working. I barely had time to go to the bathroom or eat, let alone relax. It was awesome though. I met a lot of wonderful people, learned a lot about the music industry, and now have a better understanding of inspiration and art. And Sofia would not let me forget that she was angry at me for leaving. There was not one time I called when she didn't answer with the following:

"Offices of the Abandoned Sister, how may I help you?"

Not even on my flight back.

Seriously, man, this comes to show how much people need my company. Or my tech support. I'd like to think it was the first one.

Molina, Molina...

I hope you guys will find it in your hearts to forgive little old negligent me, and actually listen to my lovely indie artist of the week.

Actually, she's not exactly indie. Well, yes she is, because she doesn't have a major label. But her producer's awesome, from what I hear. But, back to the indie thing, she wouldn't want me to call her that, because, uh, I dunno, but without further ado, I present to you:

Melina Gerges

Ain't she the cutest thing you've ever seen?

Melina here is a classically trained soprano, but currently works as a very successful and driven sales rep.

She's also recording an album. And I interviewed her about it.

My favorite parts:

So what are your new songs about?

I had a friend who lost her child, and I wanted to write a short ballad that was very straightforward. Just about the feeling of loss. You feel so isolated when you lose a loved one, and no one should feel that way... It's profound because you realize when you lose somebody that there's a hole, and the things that you're used to and you take for granted just change. When someone wakes you up, or the way someone talks to you, or when you go to the grocery store... everything that your used to is gone. And it's a deep, deep loss... Its not such a wordy song. It's more about the feeling and the voice, and about the feeling of music. It's a piano ballad by the way.

Tell us about your producer.

Doug is really special. He's very talented in writing music, I think it's in his mind all the time. We started with some ideas, but I feel that now we're starting to get what makes a really good partnership. When he's writing music for me, he hears my spirit and he hears my voice and how that fits together.

What's the first song you ever wrote?

Oh my God, I cant remember! I was a little kid. I wrote a song, I made up words and I recorded it. I gave it to my uncles and let them listen to it. I was one of those characters that would make up stories make up songs. I hum to myself all the time. I would walk around the house in costume, I was always that kind of kid. Really happy. I was either always laughing or crying (I know) No in between for me.

Have you heard Green Day's new album? It's a rock opera.

Oh wow... There was another one, Janis Joplin who did a rock opera also. I think.

Did she?

Maybe.

Are you into Janis Joplin?

Oh yeah?

Vocally?

Oh, no.

So that was my edited version of the interview. It was fun.

You can listen to her music at Melina Music, her MySpace, or become a fan on Facebook!

-Maria Teresa

P.S. Did I mention she's my cousin?

Let's be friends! I think...

I've been lying about myself the whole time.

Oh, the shame, the guilt, the pain, the weight on my shoulders that I now lift off my back with my confession.

That's an exaggeration, of course.

But I've been thinking that you might have gotten the impression that my only joy in life is sarcasm. And it is. I mean it's not. I mean it's one of them, but it's not on the top of my list. Purell is. Purell makes me happier than mocking people. Really. I mean it.

So that you can get to know me better, I present you:

Stuff about me that you should know:

Might as well start with my greatest joys in life.

My greatest joys in life (in no real order)

1. Prayer (bet you wouldn't have guessed that, huh?)

2. God. (Maybe that should have come first?)

3. Croissants.

4. My siblings

5. Books.

6. Philosophy

7. My family

8. Sarcasm (I said top, I did!)

9. Stationary

10. Painting

11. Old books

12. Stationary

13. Purell

14. Spending time with my mom

15. Feeling that I'm making a difference in this world. And not by reducing the number of croissants in existence, mind you

Which brings me to:

Stuff I'm into:

1. Philosophy

2. Theology

3. Visual Arts

3. Art History

4. Music

5. Pick and choose vegetarianism (Thank you, Kevin.)

6. Nail Polish

7. Activism (yup, the cool kind where you picket and march.)

8. Politics

9. Jewelery

10. I ran out. Sorry

11. Which reminds me of: A cure for my ADD

Which brings me to:

My favorite color is red

I really like lying face down in the grass and smelling it's lovely, sweet smell.

I like reading poetry.

While eating apples.

And I cry more than I would like to admit.

I wish there would be a Renaissance revival. That would be so cool.

I like tie dye t-shirts. Strike 154 against me. Or for me. For me, I'm proud.

I hate Valentine's Day. I should protest that. Hmm...

I have four brothers. And Sofi. A sister obviously. That makes six, and I'm hoping, praying, wishing seven soon. Did you know that?

I'm currently organizing my inbox, and it's sooooo time consuming. It's driving my po little head crazyyy.

I like flowers. They smell nice. I like to stick them in my hair.

Oh, God. If I weren't such a bitter person, I would think I was this guy.

My hair looks like that 99.9% of the time, and I do play the guitar, but it doesn't have stickers promoting drug usage.

So I'm good.

Randomnessssssssssssssssss!!!!!!!

OK, this is about randomness. I am going to go from one topic to another.

A. Why don't any of you comment? I feel like nobody reads our blog! So if you're reading please comment!

B.Why are people so stupid?! I mean, sometimes I just want to shove them under a rock and leave them there forever.

C. Why do people find Edward/Robert attractive? He is scary ugly! He scares me.

D. What do you think about Courtney Kardashian's birth choice? I was proud of here for keeping her baby. And it would of been ridiculous not to. I mean, have you seen that family? They're all sooo pretty and imagine what a lovely baby you would be killing?!?!

E. Did you know the average goldfish has the memory span of three seconds? You probably did not.

F. Lady Gaga is yucky she seriously disturbs me. *ugh shudders*

G.I like that song by the White Tie Affair, "Sick and Tired(candle)"

H. Why do people curse? I mean, whats the point? All you do is disturb or bother people around you. Plus, you add time to your confession.

I.What era would you rather been born in? Medieval times? Early 1900's? Oh or the 80's? No not me! I like this era! A/C , T.V, movies, cars, houses! SO MUCH BETTER THAN BEING A SERF IN SOME MUDDY MEDIEVAL SETTING!

Well l that's it for today folks!
Thank you,

Goodbye Les Paul. And all you squares leave me alone!!!!!!

First off, I would like to say goodbye to one of my musical inspirations, who died Thursday, Les Paul. So to you God of all Guitar Gods, please bless me with some of your magic talent dust from guitar heaven. And goodbye.

This has not been a good summer for musicians.

Now that that's off my chest, I will get to the real blogging part. Since we're on the topic of music, how many of you have ever mentioned a certain genre of music that you listen to, and then have a surprising reaction from whenever you were talking to?

Me! Me! I have Ms. T!

Really, I listen to most kinds of music, except those that involve accordions, banjos, and graphic details concerning the human anatomy. That said, whenever I mention I listen to heavy metal, people react as if I told them I was on America's Most Wanted.

"You're kidding?! You? I don't believe this! Why?"

"Because I like it so leave me alone."

I don't really say that, because I'm too nice (or a wimp), which apparently is why my musical preferences shock people. No I don't wear black leather, chains, or heavy make up. I don't wear any makeup at all, really, which is not to say that I only use long denim skirts and old lady shoes. But I am the nice girl. Which is inconvenient, in some cases, as in this one.

Then people think that I only listen to heavy metal. Usually, these are people that have only ventured into the lands of the Jonas Brothers, Lady Gaga, Kelly Clarkson, or if they're really adventurous (gasp!) Green Day. So whenever the radio is on they ask if the they should change the channel.

"Uhh, this is Jason Mraz, do you listen to him? We can change it to another station, like, well, I don't know what stations do you listen to?"

It's nice that they care. I think. But only people who do wear black leather, chains, and heavy make up would be irritated to have to listen to Pop. I will listen to Jason Mraz, or Kelly Klarkson, and some Jonas Brothers songs. I would even listen to Lady Gaga if someone paid me to. Even though musically, I'm more of a rock person, I don't limit myself to distorted guitars or growling vocals. Even if my list of favorite bands includes Metallica, Led Zeppelin, and AC/DC (which aren't even hardcore, for pete's sake!), I have Vivaldi, Bob Marley, The Velvet Underground (which is one of my all time favorite musical acts evar) and The Beatles on my Pandora Radio account.

Metal is just misunderstood. If you can get past the brooding lyrics and vocals (which are really what scare people, not the music per se), you can find genuine depth.

I mean, how can you even begin to compare this:

And as we wind on down the road
Our shadows taller than our soul.
There walks a lady we all know
Who shines white light and wants to show
How everything still turns to gold.

With this gem:

Life is just a party so come as you are
Dress it up or dress it down, never forget your guitar
Just be courageous, this styles contagious
Everyone can rock out like a superstar

(Please, Miley fire your songwriter. He's ruining your credibility)

So even though I obviously like metal a lot, I should say here that that doesn't make me a metalhead. Yes, you people, you raise your eyebrows or pray for my salvation or ask what the heck I'm listening to because it's bringing back memories of bad Halloween experiences or childhood nightmares. I will announce here, for all to see, that heavy metal is not my favorite type of music.

Nope. It's not.

It's grunge.

So, please excuse my rant, sleep well, and listen to some nice music, like the Beach Boys (May I recommend Wouldn't It Be Nice?). It will make you happy.

-Maria T.
